    I'm Back

    It's almost 3 years? I think...

Revisited this blog... yes, was not even aware that I started blogging while I was in Bhutan.

Hahaha... My true blogging journey only began last year, when I joined ETD.

Reading my entries in my early days in Bhutan... look back with a smile :D

    strange behaviour
It has been quite frustrating when things don't move despite of the push... at times, the rock only move a little when the push is hard... and sad that it only moves when weather changes... WHY? WHY? WHY?

Seems like words 'initiative' and 'motivation' are missing from the local dictionary? There are so much things that can be done, but without these word, one will never observe changes. What's wrong? Why these people have no drive? Is this one of the ways to respond to the national initiative - "National Gross Happiness" here? To be a happy citizen, one will behave in a way that one like to be, remain happen, and that will contribute to part of the happiness to be achieved nationwide?

To be happy, one will engage in what one likes to do, re-prioritise with the 'self' component right before any other thing? The belief has blinded one from being able to prioritise? Then how about PROGRESS? Does one see progress being an important element to move one up the achievement ladder, social ladder?

Driving people is not an easy job here... (1) It's very people-orientated place (2) Relationship comes forth compared to work, work, work... When horizontal push doesn't respond, then would have to resort to vertical force... sigh... fortunately, to-date, the top is pretty supportive and responded to the call for help :D

Of course, the receiving end does not feel good... nevertheless, look from another perspective, ultimately, what's done is for the good of the organisation... being part of the organisation, one should be active rather than behave like a parasite.

    It's a cow? It's a horse? It's a donkey!
While crossing the wood bridge this morning, saw a little boy (in his little gho) but a seem-to-be heavy bag rossing the bridge. Beside him was a little black puppy, waggering its tail and following it... wonder if it's the boy chasing the puppy or the other way round. anyway, Both seems to enjoy each other's company.

Just a thought, do Singapore children react the same way, with little puppies they see on the road? Or in the first place, would the parents have shielded them from coming close to animals of unknown source... hey, do we have dogs and puppies roam around on our roads, on our streets, in the parks????

The walk beside the bridge is a breezy one... the walk gushing pass, occasional flies, from the left to the right - as far as they don't hit my face, it's fine... hm... something creamy colour in the bushes, is that my 'neighbour'? Oh yes, don't see my 'neighbours' this morning - they greeted me along the way, before I reach the bridge every morning... where are they? No No it's something slimmer.... it's a horse??? No No... a closer look... it's a DONKEY enjoying its breakfast...

    5-day week
Recently, 5-day week has become a very hot topic - at least, I believe that's what's happening in the HOD room. It affects not only the 'personal' lives in the room, but also the overall system - scheduling and re-deployment of time for various existing activities.

Can imagine the long-term residents of the room - Guay Hwee and Zubaidah, also occasionally Leoard - who're always back on Saturday... hahahaha.... is the door going to be 'locked'??? I could imagine how it's going to impact my life in Ngee Ann if I'm still there... I'll panic if the room is not available on Saturdays... indeed, we always long for more CDAC sessions going on, and sometimes, possibly extension of the Saturady opening hours??? Can remember in June, always frown when the closing hours are near...

Of course, even if the room is unavailable, or though some seldom appear on Saturdays, we believe that all are working very hard, no matter where... just a slightly different work environment... My computer will still be 'waking up' very early and in full swing by mid-morning.

Just imagine... there are occasions when meetings are conducted on Saturdays... so now... in the evenings??? Dinners be included? So, Saturdays and Sundays become 're-charging' times???

On the other hand, of course it means Saturday morning can now be put aside as Personal/Family time perhaps :D

    Time flies... 8 weeks passed...
It's really fast... Just finished my 7th teaching week... to be exact, already in Bhutan for 8 weeks???

These couple of days have been rainy... have been looking out for 'strategic time' to leave the campus in the evening... before the rain arrives. Has the weather in Bhutan changed? Was told it's summer and should not be expecting any rain at this period.... of course, the temperature is in a downward trend.

Went to Thimphu on Monday... well, all 3 skin specialists come to a common diagnosis - the 'abstract art' is due to insect-bite reaction - all because the body is not used to the 'bites' - will take sometime for it to stop reacting. Bought a new set of bedsheet (of light colour) - this time can see all the 'foreign bodies' visiting me!!! Yes, spray, spray, spray, kill, kill, kill... am now in a constant lookout. Still getting fresh bits... yes, probably from the work environment. However, it's not easy to manage that 'cos I'm not the sole user here! Taking care of the house is tiring enough!

Well, realised that 'service' is very lacking in Bhutan! People here don't sell service, hence have a hard time finding people to wash the bedsheets and quilt. Well, no point buying a washing machine since it can't wash the quilt... too heavy and will send the machine to 'heaven'. On the other hand, not comfortable asking the locals - imagine, they wash on the floor, and lay it on the ground or whatever to dry!!! Can imagine the scenario... Decided to check with Els, a Swiss consultant at NIE - at least she'll have a higher 'standard' of cleanliness, as compared to the locals! Great! She has offered to get her maid to help :D Nevertheless, it's no long term, so must still think of a means... hm...

    Something New...
Very interesting, come to know about this site from Phei Phei :D Thanks, Phei Phei!

Read about your stories... interesting... especially about the Lizards!!! hahaha... It seems like each country has their unique 'creatures' - Lizards at Laos, while Dust Mites at Bhutan!!! Wait to hear from Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia where the SVOs are posted to. How I wish I've been forewarned of these mighty creatures before I left Singapore, so that I would be more well equipped with the necessary 'weapons'! Indeed, have fallen into the victim of the mighty mites (as Huay Yong has named them).

Well, tomorrow will be making my 3rd trip to Thimphu since arrived... the first one was to get electrical applicances like the refridgerator and TV) for the house (oh yes, such are not available at the 'ulu' Paro). Second was to the Thimphu hospital, and tomorrow, the third, same to the hospital.

Probably I've broken all the records in terms of visiting the hospital (well, well, that's the only place that one could find doctors! yes, yes, they are the rare species here, especially in Paro, at any one time, there're only 3 doctors maximum). Tomorrow's going to be my 6th attempt over 5 weeks since arrival at Bhutan. All because of the masterpiece of the mighty mites!
